| One of the woodland plants found patches in cool damp situations. A stemless perennial about 3-4 inches high this creeping plant has frail bell like flowers about an inch broad, five notched petals lined with pink or white veins. Its leaves are distinctive, divided into three drooping, folded heart shaped leaflets that close up in strong sunshine and at night. Bright green above and purplish beneathe, they contain a mild acid which gives them a sharp lemony flavour. A native of the old world, most interesting flower frequently introduced in paintings of Fra Angelico and Sandro Boticelli. |
